AI terms made clear
Common artificial intelligence terms explained in plain language, without jargon. Ideal when you are just getting started.
- AI (artificial intelligence)
- Software that can perform tasks that previously required a person, such as writing text, understanding questions or finding patterns in data.
- LLM (large language model)
- The engine behind tools like ChatGPT. It learned from large amounts of text to predict what makes sense to write next.
- Prompt
- The instruction you give to AI. The clearer and more specific it is, the better the result.
- Prompt engineering
- The skill of giving AI instructions so it does exactly what you need. No programming required - just good wording.
- Hallucination
- When AI makes something up and presents it as fact. Important information should always be checked.
- Token
- A small piece of text, roughly a word or part of a word, that AI processes. Input and output length are measured in tokens.
- Generative AI
- AI that creates something new, such as text, images, music or code.
- Agent
- AI that not only answers but also performs steps, such as searching for information, filling in a table or preparing an e-mail.
- RAG
- A method where AI answers using your own documents, not only what it learned during training. Useful for company knowledge bases.
- Automation
- When software handles a repeated task for you. AI can take automation further because it can handle more complex instructions.
- Multimodal AI
- AI that understands several input types at once, such as text, images and audio.
- AI Act
- European rules for using AI. Most small companies are affected only lightly, but it is useful to know where you stand.
